How can assessment be helpful? 

Assessments may differ dependent on the child's age, reason for referral and modality of play therapy. 


  • Can provide further insight on attachment, relationships, including family and school dynamics.
  • Baseline of current play and developmental skills, this assists the therapist to create appropriate individualised support that aligns with the client's goals and developmental level. 
  • Play and social comprehension. 
  • May indicate current presenting emotional difficulties, where referral for further external support and assessment may be warranted.

  • Pretend Play Enjoyment Developmental Checklist (PPE-DC)
  • Animated Movie Test (AMT)
  • Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ)
  • Family Genogram (including Sand tray adaptation).
  • Blob Tree (Parent and child)
  • Kinetic Family Drawing or Kinetic School Drawing
  • House-Person-Tree Test (HPT)
  • Secure Base Attachment (SBI)
